What You Need

pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, broken into pieces

cup (1-1/2 sticks) butter or margarine

1-1/2

cups sugar

eggs

tsp. vanilla

2-1/2

cups flour, divided

tsp. baking soda

1/4

tsp. salt

1-1/2

cups water

Make It

PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Microwave chocolate and butter in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until butter is melted. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating with electric mixer on low speed after each addition until well blended. Add vanilla; mix well.

ADD 1/2 cup of the flour, the baking soda and salt; beat until well blended. Add remaining 2 cups flour alternately with water, beating until well blended after each addition. Pour evenly into 2 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans.

BAKE 35 min. or until toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 min.; remove from pans. Cool completely on wire racks. Spread with your favorite frosting, if desired. (NOTE: Nutrition information is for unfrosted cake.)

Variation

Prepare batter as directed; pour into greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Bake 55 min. or until wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan. Frost as desired.

High Altitude Directions

Prepare and bake as directed, increasing flour to 2-2/3 cups and water to 1-3/4 cups.

I've made this cake with both a buttercream and the chocolate frosting, and it's delicious with both. I used cake flour instead for an even finer texture. It's my "go to" chocolate cake.

This was my first cake from scratch, and it was GREAT!!! It was sweet but not overly sweet. One of the best cakes I have had.

Everybody else said the cake was good, but I wasn't empressed by it at all. It wasn't sweet to me. I guess I have to add more sugar and vanilla flavor.

a good substitute for the water is coconut milk it gives it a more tropical taste in a way it jusy slightly improves the taste it also bring out the sweetness of the chocolate in the cake
