Blast-Off Spaceship Cake

What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) white cake mix

cups boiling water

pkg. (4-serving size each) JELL-O Strawberry Flavor Gelatin

tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed

Tbsp. decorating icing

candy-coated chocolate pieces

piece string licorice (10 inches), cut in 2-inch pieces

Make It

PREPARE cake batter and bake in 13x9-inch baking pan as directed on package. Cool in pan 15 min. (Do not remove cake from pan.)

MEANWHILE, stir boiling water into dry gelatin mix in large bowl at least 2 min. until completely dissolved. Pierce cake with large fork or wooden skewer at 1/2-inch intervals. Carefully pour gelatin over cake in pan. Cover and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.

DIP pan in warm water 10 sec.; unmold cake onto cutting board. Cut into pieces as shown in diagram and photo. Arrange pieces on large foil-covered board or platter to resemble a spaceship as shown in photo. Spread top and sides of cake with whipped topping. Decorate with remaining ingredients as desired. Store in refrigerator. Add sparkler candles to cake and light up just before serving to resemble the blast off!

How to Frost A Cake

If the cake is very soft and crumbly, apply a "crumb coating" to prevent cake crumbs from mixing with the frosting. Spread a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake, then let stand 5 to 10 min. or until frosting is set. Spread remaining frosting over cake.

Cooking Know-How

Make sure cake is completely cooled before frosting. A warm cake can cause the frosting to soften or melt.

Substitute

Prepare as directed, using your favorite flavor of JELL-O Gelatin.

I did not have time to use the jell-o, but it turned out better than I ever expected! Great reviews from family & friends. Used for son 3rd b-day party, he loved it. The surprise look in his eyes made it worth it!

I didn't actually use the recipe. I used the pattern and a strawberry cake and homemade icing. It turns out very cute. My advice is to chill the cake even if you don't use the jello. It is hard to put icing on since you have to cut into the sides and all. It was a hit at my son's First birthday party!

Was a definite hit. Everyone loved it. I used raspberry jell-o and made my own icing for the top. Will make again and again...
