We are not big fans of steak sauce, so I did not use it. I add 2 cans BEEF vegetable soup (NOT vegetable beef) and 1/4 to 1/2 can water to the browned beef & onion, let simmer, covered, for about 10 minutes to blend flavors. Pour into casserole dish, and top with mashed potatoes & cheese. May bake to melt & brown cheese if desired, but I usually don't, as the hot potatoes melts the cheese nicely. This does not taste like the soup at all, but has it's own unique flavor.Serve with a salad for some crunch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I made this for my family last night but doubled the recipe and they all loved it! I made this for my family last night but doubled the recipe and they all loved it! Even my nephew who said he hated A1 steak sauce liked it and had seconds! The only thing my hubby said that he thought the A1 was a bit strong so asked if I could cut down on the amount called for. He was the only one though that thought that. Very easy to make and you can add all kinds of things to the ground beef to make it more interesting like canned corn, green beans, mushrooms and so on. My family voted it a keeper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've made this recipe several times now. I've made this recipe several times now. The bbq sauce tastes better than A-1. I add more cheese to it. I add a layer of mozzarella & mexican blend over the meat & cover, which allows it to melt. I use instant potatoes & then more cheese on top. We have added green beans & corn to this to give it a shepherd's pie look & taste. Works wonderfully. If we don't add the veggies to it, we have them on the side. I took this to a potluck in March & had to make another one when I got home!

Very good -- a big hit with my wee family --- bit I would sneak veggies into my recipe AGAIN next time as the kids are more likely to eat them if they are 'hidden' in the beef part than served along the side. I made it with ground turkey and upped the A1 sauce and added some more spices to make it 'healthier' as we are not big beef eaters in out family ... I think it was just as good.

I have made this for many years and my children used to call it cowboy pie when we added a layer of pork and beans between the meat and potato topping. I now make it for grandsone coming after school. My husband will ask for this at least once every few weeks.... its easy and its quick and you can make some different variations....

I made this w/ a few adjustments, I decreased the onion b/c we are not an onion liking family and I decreased the A1 b/c that was just way to much. I did add a can of kidney beans as another person had suggested. Also I added a little minced garlic. all in all it was just ok my hubby said it wasn't that great, I thought it was missing something...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My mother prepared this dish quite often when I was a kid. My mother prepared this dish quite often when I was a kid. She called it 'Shepherd's Pie' and mixed in tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, carrots with the browned ground beef. She'd top it with the mashed potatoes and a little bit of shredded cheese. Accompanied with a salad and roll, it's the perfect meal, and one I've passed on to my grown children.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This was just okay. This was just okay. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fabulous either. The next time, I would add more to the ground beef and onion mixture-perhaps mushrooms and green bell pepper. The A.1. didn't do it for me either. I would replace it with something else. Everyone ate their serving without complaining, but they weren't crazy about it.
