The whipped topping should be room temperature or warmer. Because when I mixed in the topping into the chocolate I got a lump of topping with bits of chocolate in it. I had to put the bowl over a pot of boiling water to get the mixture to combine (get the chocolate to re-melt).

FIRST, THE RECIPE CALLS FOR 1 - 8OZ TUB OF COOL WHIP, BUT IN THE DIRECTIONS IT SAYS TO ADD 2 CUPS (16OZ) OF COOL WHIP TO CHOCOLATE AND TO SET ASIDE THE REMAINING COOLWHIP FOR TOPPING. THE PIE WAS VERY BITTER WHEN USING ONLY 1 - 8OZ TUB LIKE THE RECIPE CALLS FOR. IT WAS A EXPENSIVE PIE, ESPECIALLY WHEN MY FAMILY WOULDN'T EAT IT.

This pie is very simple to make, but by using semi-sweet chocolate bars instead of a pudding or something else of that sort, the pie is extremely RICH! I could barely eat it myself. I think you have to be a bigger fan of dark chocolate to like it, also. I may try making it again, but using a different type of chocolate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I miss read the amount of chocolate to use. I miss read the amount of chocolate to use. I thought it said 8 oz not 8 squares. I only had 4 oz of chocolate, so I added an extra cup of chocolate chips. Everyone loved it. I was even asked for the recipe, that is when I noticed the mistake. I told them about my mistake and they said that is how they would make it.

After reading the varied comments on this recipe I wasn't sure if I should risk it or not for Thanksgiving. I'm so glad I did!! It turned out perfectly and all I got were rave reviews. My only regret is that I had to leave the remaining pie at my sister's house and couldn't take it home with me! Fantastic.

The carmel set up like concrete and did not soften as it can to room temperature. I will definately use the chocolate base again, but will probably use a premade carmel sauce drizzled over the top.
