  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix flour, 1/3 cup of the sugar, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Beat egg and cream with wire whisk until well blended. Add to flour mixture; stir until mixture forms soft dough. Stir in chopped chocolate.
  • Place dough on floured surface; knead until dough is no longer sticky. Place on greased baking sheet; pat out dough with hands to 10-inch circle. Score top with sharp knife into 12 wedges. Sprinkle with remaining 1 Tbsp. sugar.
  • Bake 23 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cut into 12 wedges to serve.

Several girlfriends and I had gone to London a number of years ago and vowed to have tea and scones upon return to the U.S. Four years later, we finally had our tea party. The scones were great, along with chocolate dipped strawberries. Of course we are chocoholics, so it was not too sweet or too much chocolate! I made them in the shape the recipe said, although we enjoyed them in London in the shape of a tall biscuit. Will make them again!

Since scones are a popular food in England, I decided to make these for my students to try - and they tried them and LOVED them!! I served them with tea - it was a great treat for my class!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favorites when I need a chocolate fix! One of my favorites when I need a chocolate fix! I substitute milk for the cream for a healthier version. Works great. I also make them more like biscuits. I found it was easier.
