I've always been afraid to try making cut-out cookies, but this recipe converted me! I did have to make one important modification, though. The dough was too crumbling to roll into a ball, even after refrigeration. Therefore, I added one tablespoon of milk to the dough mixture, and it gave it enough wetness to roll out with ease. Two notes of caution: 1) Make sure the cut-outs are slightly chilled before baking. I did it both ways, and the ones that weren't chilled spread more and distorted the bear shapes a bit. 2) My kids and I decorated these with various candies prior to baking, and we found out that fruit roll-ups and "Nerds" pellets melted and ruined the cookies in the baking process. Mini M&M's, raisins, and sprinkles worked beautifully. The other option would be to decorate minimally prior to baking (such as eyes and mouth), then finish decorating with melted chocolate as glue and other candies, nuts, and marshmellows as the recipe suggested.
