  • Mix flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. Microwave chocolate and butter in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until butter is melted. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Add 1 cup sugar, egg and vanilla; mix well. Stir in flour mixture until well blended. Refrigerate 15 min. or until dough is easy to handle.
  • Heat oven to 375°F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in remaining sugar. Place, 2 inches apart, on baking sheets.
  • Bake 8 to 10 min. or until centers are set. Cool on baking sheets 1 min. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.

Size Wise

Dessert can be a part of a balanced diet, but remember to keep tabs on portions.

Jam-Filled Chocolate Sugar Cookies

Omit 1/2 cup of the sugar. Prepare dough and shape into balls as directed. Roll in 1/2 cup chopped PLANTERS Pecans instead of the sugar. Place, 2 inches apart, on baking sheets. Make indentation in each ball; fill center with your favorite jam. Bake as directed.

Special Extra

Place cookie dough on parchment-covered baking sheets to prevent cookies from sticking to pans and to help keep baking sheets clean between batches.

Chocolate-Caramel Sugar Cookies

Omit 1/2 cup of the sugar. Prepare dough and shape into balls as directed. Roll in 1/2 cup chopped PLANTERS Pecans instead of the sugar. Place, 2 inches apart, on baking sheets. Make indentation in each ball. Bake as directed. Microwave 1 pkg. (14 oz.) KRAFT Caramels and 2 Tbsp. milk in microwaveable bowl on HIGH 3 min. or until caramels are completely melted, stirring after 2 min. Spoon into centers of cookies. Drizzle with melted BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate. Cool completely.

Variation

If thinner crisper cookies are desired, flatten balls of dough on baking sheet with bottom of clean glass before baking as directed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ah, the delight of a wary recipe gone right! Ah, the delight of a wary recipe gone right! In preparing for the desserts I plan to make for Christmas, I accidentally got an extra box of unsweetened chocolate. Ignorant as I am, I thought I might eat it as is, by itself; never have I known chocolate to taste so terrible—I had to get rid of the unsweetened thing somehow. I’m so glad I found this recipe! Now, the chocolate tastes a lot better ^_^ and there’s plenty of cookie dough left over too. Now I’ve dessert to eat in a formerly dessert-less apartment.

I tried to make them again this year and they just didn't taste chocolaty at all. Not sure what happened. The only difference is last year I didnt roll them in sugar and this year I did. They also were not as dark as they were last year? hmm...threw them out due to the taste. Maybe next year I'll try again...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I made these for Valentines Day and they were a hit. I made these for Valentines Day and they were a hit. Rather than shaping in balls and rolling in sugar I placed a cookie cutter on the baking sheet and pressed dough into the cutter to get heart shapes. Then I frosted them with pink frosting and red sprinkles. I had a plain one and the frosting made it 100% better!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I first made these for Christmas last year and they were a huge hit! I first made these for Christmas last year and they were a huge hit!!! Everyone loved them...and they are very easy to make. Instead of just using regular white sugar to roll them in, I used red, green, and white--to give them more of a festive look. I LOVE these cookies...and I don't like chocolate! :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I have a mixed review on these cookies. I have a mixed review on these cookies. I made them with the semi-sweet chocolate, I still think they are a bit bland, however, we still enjoyed them. They are good because they are crunchy on the outside, yet super soft inside. I will probably make them again. The kids liked them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I subsituted Baker's Semi-Sweet Chocolate for the Unsweetened variety. I subsituted Baker's Semi-Sweet Chocolate for the Unsweetened variety. Some of the post, referred to the cookie not being sweet enough. I think by using the semi-sweet chocolate, it gave it the right amount of sweetness. They were quick and easy and I will make them again.
