What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) chocolate flavor cake mix

cups thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping

OREO Cookies, finely crushed (about 1 cup)

Make It

PREPARE cake batter and bake as directed on package for 13x9-inch pan. Cool cake in pan 5 min.; remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely. Cut 2-inch-wide strip off one side of cake; cut into shapes to create boulders.

FROST remaining cake with COOL WHIP; sprinkle with cookie crumbs to represent dirt.

PLACE boulders in piles on top of cake. Place clean small toy construction vehicles on top of cake.

Make Ahead

Bake cake a day ahead, cool and cover with plastic wrap. Decorate the morning of the party, loosely covering boulders with plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

I modified this to make a barnyard cake with the extra being hay bales. I put animals and a small barn on top and colored the cool whip green with food coloring. It turned out good!

My sister in-law made this for her son's 3rd birthday. She said it was super easy. It looked absolutely adorable.

made this cake for my sons 2nd birthday and it was a huge hit, i did however use the entire sheet cake and made brownies for the "dirt" everyone loved it and my sone got to dig into his cake, literally!!! one downside, finding the toys to go one top, i went to 3 different stores!

Fantastic cake!! I made this for my son's first birthday and it turned out really cute! I used regular frosting instead of cool whip because it's easier to frost. I also used brownies for the boulders instead of pieces of the cake. I used frosting to write Happy Birthday on top of the cake opposite the boulders. I got tons of compliments on it! Everyone wanted a piece of cake with the brownie in it. Easy,yummy, and looks great!

This was so easy and looked great. The only thing I did different was use regular frosting instead of cool whip. It worked just fine.

I made this cake for my son's 2 year birthday. It was so easy to make and turned out so cute. I am not a very creative person and this turned out great.

This cake was perfect for my son's second birthday! I was looking for a recipe that had something to do with cars or trucks but that didn't take a lot of time. This was definitely it! I simply baked the cake earlier in the day and decorated it right before our guests arrived. All of the grown ups thought it was super creative! And, of course, my son was thrilled to have the trucks to play with. I used whipped white icing and only iced it on top and part way down the sides. That way the actual cake was showing at the bottom in order to resemble dirt. I just didn't want to mess with the oreo crumbs. It really turned out great! What a cute idea!
