what you need

cups wheat and barley cereal flakes, lightly crushed

1-1/2

cups firmly packed brown sugar, divided

1-1/2

tsp. ground cinnamon, divided

cups all purpose baking mix

1-1/4

cups and 2 Tbsp. fat-free milk, divided

eggs

1/4

cup oil

1-1/4

cups powdered sugar

Make It

COMBINE cereal, 1 cup of the brown sugar and 1 tsp. of the cinnamon; set aside. Mix together baking mix, remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1-1/4 cups of the milk, eggs and oil just until blended. Pour half of the batter into a 13x9-inch baking pan sprayed with cooking spray; sprinkle with half of the cereal mixture. Repeat layers.

BAKE at 350ºF for 35 min. or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 min. Cut into 24 squares.

WHISK together powdered sugar, remaining 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and remaining 2 Tbsp. milk until well blended. Drizzle over coffee cake. Let stand until set.

I made this recipe and it's very bland and very dry. The topping is ok and could work but the cake is very dry. I wouldn't make it again.

We liked the flavor of the cake and cinnamon, but not the aftertaste of the cereal. The topping does not stay crisp after the first day.

I agree with KKWharton! This coffee cake was quite tasteless and crumbly. And I served it to my Wednesday morning Bible Study class that I attend. Never again!

For the people who used applesauce instead of oil, how much applesauce did you use?

Really tasty. I used 1/4 cup applesauce instead of the oil. The icing really adds a lot to the flavor. My toppng became really crumbly after several hours and fell off after cutting it- I guess that' s why they suggest cutting the pieces beforehand.

I used Corn Flakes instead of GrapeNuts then drizzled caramel topping on top. Delicious!!!
