Whole Chicken Tips & Tricks
- Don’t be intimidated by cutting up a whole chicken - it can be a money-saving step that gets easier with practice. Watch our step-by-step how to cut up a whole chicken video to help you get started.
- Use paper towels to pat the chicken dry before cooking. This will help create a crispy skin or ensure better browning on skinless pieces.
- Ready to roast? An oven or roasting rack isn’t necessary. Place the whole chicken, breast-side up, on a bed of coarsely chopped onions, carrots and/or celery. The cooked vegetables will add moisture and flavor to the pan drippings used to make the gravy. Check out tips for perfect gravy – our simple steps will give you smooth gravy every time.
- To stuff or not to stuff? If you wish to stuff a whole chicken before roasting, prepare your favorite STOVE TOP Stuffing Mix as directed on the package. Lightly spoon the stuffing into the chicken cavity. Any remaining stuffing can be baked in a small baking dish for the last 30 minutes of the chicken cooking time. Always check the internal temperature of both the chicken and stuffing to ensure they are cooked to 165°F. A stuffed chicken will require additional cooking time.
- Leftover cooked chicken can be used to make one of these delicious recipes: Zesty Chicken Pot Pie, Creamy Chicken Enchiladas, or Speedy Asian Chicken Soup Bowls.
