Giddy-Up Horse Cake

i made this cake for my 6 yr old bday and we loved making it together we used m&m s for the harness and piped whitte icing for the mane love it!

What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) chocolate cake mix

1-1/2

pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate (6 oz.), broken into pieces

cup whipping cream

cup powdered sugar

white ring-shaped hard candies (for eyes)

red ring-shaped hard candies (for bridle)

assorted candy-coated chocolate pieces (for bridle)

pieces (8 inch each) string licorice (for bridle)

Make It

PREPARE cake batter and bake in greased foil-lined 13x9-inch baking pan as directed on package. Cool completely. Cut cake into pieces as shown in diagram. Arrange on serving platter as shown in photo ; set aside.

PLACE chocolate and cream in medium microwaveable bowl. Microwave on MEDIUM (50%) 2 to 3 min. or until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring after each min. Remove 1/4 cup of the chocolate mixture; place in small resealable plastic bag. Set aside. Add powdered sugar to remaining chocolate mixture in bowl; beat with wire whisk until smooth and of spreading consistency. Spread onto cake.

DECORATE with candies as shown in photo. Cut 1/8-inch piece from one of the bottom corners of bag of melted chocolate. Use to pipe chocolate onto the cake for the "horse's mane."

How to Frost a Cake

If the cake is very soft and crumbly, apply a “crumb coating” to prevent cake crumbs from mixing with the frosting. Spread a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake, then let stand 5 to 10 min. or until frosting is set. Spread remaining frosting over cake.

Easy Cleanup

Lining the baking pan with foil makes for easy cleanup and easy removal of the cake from the baking pan. When lining the pan, allow 3 inches of the foil to extend over each side of pan to use as handles when removing the cake from the pan.

The template doesn't seem to line up/match the picture. Did everyone use the template that was on the print page, or did you alter it? Cake is baked and cooling

After so many reviewers have written about this icing being so thin and runny, which makes it impossible to pipe the horse's mane, why, oh, why, wouldn't you review this recipe and make it so that it works?? That's what I'd love to know!

I made this for my sons 5th birthday and he loved it. I received so many compliments on this cake! I did not make the frosting as others had issues with it and I didn't want to chance it. If given the opportunity I would make it again! Perfect cake for a Cowboy party!

I made this cake for my daughter's 6th bday party and she loved it! It made me look so creative! I used regular canned chocolate icing but it didn't turn out as smooth as the picture so next time I will try the icing recipe. It was still adorable though! Great recipe!

I've made this cake three times in the past year -- my daughter loves helping to decorate it! I do agree, something is wrong with the icing receipe. I used canned or made icing from another recipe.

I made this cake for my daughters 5th birthday party. She loved it. I used homemade buttercreme frosting rather than the chocolate, because my daughter does not like chocolate. It looked great.

I made this cake for my son's Woody Roundup party. I used a Gluten free cake mix, but still got the same beautiful cake! My guest loved it!
