  • Heat oven to 350ºF.
  • Prepare cake batter as directed on package. Blend in dry drink mix; spoon into 24 paper-lined muffin cups. Bake 20 to 25 min. or until toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean; cool completely. Meanwhile, spread 1 tsp. melted chocolate onto each graham square to completely cover top of graham; place in single layer on baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm.
  • Remove liners from cupcakes; place cupcakes upside-down on plate. Use wooden spoon handle to poke deep hole in center of each cupcake, being careful to not poke through to bottom of cupcake. Spoon COOL WHIP into resealable plastic bag. Cut small piece off one bottom corner of bag; use to pipe COOL WHIP into holes and onto tops of cupcakes, reserving small amount of COOL WHIP for later use. Top cupcakes with grahams, chocolate sides up, to resemble graduation caps.
  • Use fruit rolls to make tassels for caps. (See tip.) Add 1 tassel and jelly bean to top of each graham square, securing each with dab of remaining COOL WHIP.

Special Equipment Needed


For a black-and-white graduation, spread half the graham squares with additional COOL WHIP instead of the melted chocolate. Line up different-colored caps in alternating rows.

How to Make Tassels

Cut each fruit snack roll into 12 pieces. Cut 3/4-inch slits at one short end of each piece to resemble fringe. Tightly roll up lengthwise to resemble tassel.

How to Store

Keep filled and frosted cupcakes refrigerated.

I am a high school junior and I made these for all of "MY" Seniors right before graduation this year. I used the already dipped graham crackers and icing like sugested. For the tassles I used Twislers like some, but ended up using my own method were I cut the strands almost completely in half. I also personalized each cap by putting their initials on the grahams with a fondant icing writter.The caps ended up being a bit time consuming, as expected for a picky person like myself, but seeing the looks of gratitude on their faces made it all worth while. If you really want to show your love for the graduates, then you should make these.

I recommend using mini-muffin tins and liners instead of full-size cupcakes. Also, substitute one (or two bags) of chocolate chip or your favorite muffin mix to reduce the quantity of mini grad caps. Buy the already-coated chocolate graham crackers to save effort. I used M&M's for the grad cap button and glued everything together with a can of chocolate icing. I opted to leave out the jello all together. The tassels may need to set up in the frig. This approach makes it more manageable. Very cute but original method is very labor intensive.

Some suggestions/variations: Worth preparing the graham crackers ahead of time I used regular chocolate frosting instead of the coolwhip (no refrigeration necessary:). I also used twizzlers pull and peel candy for the tassels: cut one string in half, then cut one half in half. Press the smaller pieces diagonally to the bottom of the other piece to make a "tassel." (Trim down as needed) Secure the tassel with frosting and place a brown reeses pieces or m&m on the top. The chocolate frosting and brown colored candy coordinate nicely with the chocolate graham cracker! Definately worth trying again!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would presently rate this recipe adorable. I would presently rate this recipe adorable. I am sure it will taste just fine, based on the ingredient list. My only comment has to do with the chocolate covering the graham crackers when one wants white cup-caps. I would think you would suggest using the white dipping chocolate rather than cover the grahams with additional whipped topping. If white dipping chocolate is not available, there is always other methods for covering grahams with white chocolate, melted candy buttons, white chocoate chips. I would find using whipped topping very messy to handle when eating. Deni M.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I omitted the kool aid from the cake mix. I omitted the kool aid from the cake mix. Placed 6 semi-sweet choc. bits on each graham cracker square, placed 6 at a time in the microwave and nuked for 1 min. Spread chocolate, wrapped in wax paper and refrigerated until following day when I made cupcakes. Used regular white frosting on top of cupcakes before placing crackers on top and used mini marshmallows cut in half with a dot of frosting on bottom to hold tassels. These were a big hit at the graduation party for the kids. I made a larger version for the adults using my favorite scratch cake recipe. We had 50 at this party so I just made 24 of the cupcakes. They are a little time consuming but worth the effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW! WOW! This recipe was the best! Even though the tassels proved a challenge. They took about a half hour for the 24 we made. It was easier to make them in two pieces, string and fringe. Wrapping the fringe around the string made them look just like the picture.!! They were amazing. We used frosting instead of cool whip, and took the shortcut of buying already dipped grahams. This cupcake is a hit and we will be making it again this comming weekend for another grad party hostess treat. Thank you Kraft Foods for making me into an amazingly talented cook, once again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These were fantastic and a big hit with our guests! These were fantastic and a big hit with our guests! Sooo attractive......we feel we improved the look and ease by using chocolate cake mix, skipping the filling and covering them with a thin yummy chocolate marshmallow glaze that sealed in their moisture. We used melted chocolate coating wafers to attach everything which worked great, and as everyone else has suggested we used already coated grahams too. On another platter we also made tiny caps from Reeses' mini peanut butter cups upside down, following the same pattern with small chocolate covered grahams and tassles.

Here is my version of this recipe: Chocolate cake mix, plain chocolate graham crackers, chocolate frosting. blue m&ms, blue fruit roll up. The fruit roll up wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I refrigerated it, but that didn't make a difference at all. It returned to room temp very quickly. Maybe I'll try freezing it next time??? If you are considering making these you should go for it. It's not that difficult, you can change any part of the recipe to make it work for you or for what you have on hand. These cupcaps have a huge wow-factor for parties. They will be a hit!
