  • Microwave chocolate and cream in large microwaveable bowl on MEDIUM (50%) 2 to 3 min. or until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring after 1-1/2 min. Cool slightly. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating with electric mixer on high speed until mixture is well blended and of desired spreading consistency.
  • Use a serrated knife to cut off top one third of cake. Set top aside. Place bottom of cake on large serving platter; spread with chocolate frosting. Scatter candies and some of the coins around cake as desired. Replace top of cake; spread with the remaining chocolate frosting to resemble a treasure chest.
  • Decorate top of chest with string licorice and some of the remaining candies. Sprinkle wafer crumbs onto platter to resemble sand. Arrange any remaining coins and candy in "sand." Store in refrigerator.

How to Frost A Cake

If the cake is very soft and crumbly, apply a “crumb coating” to prevent cake crumbs from mixing with the frosting. Spread a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake, then let stand 5 to 10 min. or until frosting is set. Spread remaining frosting over cake.

What a cute cake! I made this for my daughter's 5 year old Pirate party. I ended up making 2 of them since one would probably feed 10-12 people. So easy to do. My kids helped out too. I made regular cake in a loaf pan instead of using store bought pound cake and it worked great. All of the kids, as well as the adults loved it. A couple people even asked where I ordered the cake from!

I made this for my son's Pirate birthday party, and it was so perfect! The kids were very impressed, and it was adorable. My only advice would be not to put the chocolate coins IN the cake--just around it, you can't cut through them effectively. Also, be imaginitive about what "treasure" can go in your cake. Jewel-toned fruit snacks, M&Ms, etc, are also fun!
