How Our Rating and Recommendation Systems Work
Calculating Recipe Ratings
Your "star" rating is averaged with other users' ratings to produce an "overall" recipe rating (or "average" recipe rating).
For example, if a total of three users have rated a recipe, their ratings are added together and divided by the number of user ratings for that particular recipe:
User #1: 5 stars
User #2: 4 stars
User #3: 3 stars
5+4+3 = 12 stars / 3 (total # of users) = 4 stars (overall recipe rating)
Displaying Recipe Ratings
We display recipe ratings (or lack thereof) differently depending on the type of Kraft Interactive Kitchen page. If a recipe on the site has not yet been rated by anyone, we will ask you if you'd like to rate it. Once rated, a recipe will always display the average recipe rating (except for the homepage, which will only display one if its average is greater than or equal to 3 stars). Your recipe rating will appear on the site within 24 hours after you submit it.
Displaying Comments on a Recipe Page
All comments are eligible for display on a recipe page. Due to space constraints, a maximum of two comments can be displayed at a time.
Displaying Comments on the Ratings Comments Detail Page
We display all appropriate comments regardless of their average rating. We display the most recent comments first. A maximum of 20 comments will appear on each detail page. If there are more than 20 comments, there will be a link on the bottom of the page to view more comments.
Top Rated Recipes
We display two sets of top rated recipes: "Weekly" and "Overall." All recipes within these sections are updated weekly and all types (entrees, desserts, etc.) are eligible for selection. The top rated recipes are chosen based on their average rating, the number of ratings entered and "helpfulness" (see below).
We do not edit your ratings or comments, except to remove repeated characters or punctuation. Once you share an opinion, it goes into the database. We do, however, review all comments and may not post ones that contain inappropriate content. Click here for our guidelines on what constitutes inappropriate content. Your comment will appear on the site within 24 hours after you submit it.
You can rate any comment left by any other user as helpful or not helpful. You cannot rate your own comment as helpful/not helpful.
If you return to the site at a later date and modify your recipe comment (regardless of rating change), then the associated helpfulness ratings from other users will be deleted.
If you have rated any comments as helpful or not helpful, you can return to the site and change your helpful/not helpful rating. You cannot, however, remove your helpful/not helpful rating.
When we calculate the helpfulness of a comment, we only count the helpful marks. In other words, marking a comment "not helpful" will not change its ranking, but marking it "helpful" will.
