When you mix the bottom layer, it is thick like a dough. You spread it in the pan (I used my hands and spread it like you would a crust). The consistency does NOT change as the candy sets. It has a reasonable chocolate flavor, but I would not make this recipe again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy no fail recipe. Very easy no fail recipe. I've made it for 3 years straight for teacher gifts and parties and everyone raves over it. I use white chocolate (mix with shortening not butter) and white chocolate pudding mix and sprinkle candy cane pieces on it, yummy! Another variation is butterscotch pudding with butterscotch pieces (again, mix with a little shortening, not butter for topping)....haven't gone wrong yet!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a fun recipe to experiment with! What a fun recipe to experiment with! I made it with White Chocolate instead of semi-sweet, vanilla pudding instead of chocolate, and freshly brewed black coffee instead of the water. I also reduced the sugar a bit. (by about 1/2 cup) Came out awesome! Kind of like Cafe' O' Lait Fudge. Creamy sweet and rich. Can't wait to experiment with other pudding and chocolate flavors....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very, very rich. Very, very rich. Sooo easy, a cinch compared to fantasy fudge. I made it with fat free/sugar free pudding because that was all I had, and it still turned out delicious. I also cut it into 48 pieces, which was perfect serving size for such a rich piece of chocolate. Might be good with milk chocolate instead of semi-sweet. Get ready to add on an extra few pounds...it's addicting!

I made this fudge as a treat for my coworkers one day, and although some of them moaned that they were on a diet, they still took more than one piece. :) Today, one of my coworkers was eating a piece of fudge that someone else had made (different recipe). She said, "It's not like yours. The ones you made melted in my mouth!" So yeah, this recipe was a big hit. :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This was the first time I ever made fudge and it was really easy and delicious. This was the first time I ever made fudge and it was really easy and delicious. My children helped me make two batches which we cut up to give as Valentine's Day gifts for their Teachers. It was a fun project and a big hit at school--several Teachers did not wait beyond 9:00 a.m. to try theirs! (bad example for the kids, but nice reflection on the recipe).

I was skeptical about this recipe because I have made other recipes which included instant pudding and did not like them. I really loved this fudge. It is rich, creamy and buttery. It is not the slightest bit grainy like some fudge can be. I think the powdered sugar contributes to the texture. It is a little messy to eat, but worth it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just finished making this for the first time and I followed the directions exactly as written. Just finished making this for the first time and I followed the directions exactly as written. Although the fudge tastes delicious, it does not look at smooth and consistent as it does in the picture. I used a wooden spoon to mix my ingredients. Next time I would try a hand mixer to see if the ingredients would incorporate more smoothly.
