What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) white cake mix

pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Orange Flavor Gelatin

tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed

3 to 4

drops green food coloring

oz. BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted, cooled slightly

ring-shaped chewy fruit snacks

JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows

Mini OREO Bite Size Cookies

piece black string licorice (3 feet)

Make It

PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Prepare cake batter as directed on package. Pour three fourths of the batter into greased and floured 10-cup fluted tube pan. Sprinkle dry gelatin mix evenly over batter in pan; cut through batter with knife several times for marble effect, being careful not to cut through to bottom of pan. Top with remaining batter.

BAKE 45 min. or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Invert pan onto wire rack; cool 5 min. Remove cake from pan; cool completely.

CUT out one third of cake. Cut removed cake piece in half; set aside. Stand remaining larger cake piece, cut-ends down, on cake board or tray. Place the smaller cake pieces on each end of large cake piece to resemble a curved caterpillar's body as shown in photo. Tint whipped topping with food coloring; spread onto cake. Drizzle with the melted chocolate to resemble the stripes on a caterpillar's body. Decorate with remaining ingredients as shown in photo. Store in refrigerator.

I made this for my daughter's birthday today and it turned out great! However, I did have a few problems. The cool whip was way too runny and kept running off, I think next time I would use frosting instead. Also, I could not find licorice rope anywhere. I ended up buying chocolate twizzlers and cutting them into little pieces. Instead of melted chocolate for the stripes I used licorice cut in half. I also used starbursts(cut in half) and skittles to decorate with instead, since that's what I had. I took 2 halves of a starburst and rounded them out and then stuck a skittle into the middle of each to make eyeballs. I molded the starburst a little around the skittle so it would hold and it ended up looking pretty cool. I also took one half of a starburst and used it for the nose and it looked really cute. I molded the nose a little bit, too, just so it wasn't completely square. The eyes and nose popped out and made the catterpillar's face come to life, even without a mouth. My daughter

If you put the cut pieces of bundt on the side, you can make a better looing caterpiller. I made one that looked a lot like the Very Hungry Caterpiller.

This was such a fun cake to make! My 2-yr old loves bugs, so no other cake would have been better. We prepared the cake as directed, but substituted bakery frosting - seemed to hold the cake parts together better than the Cool Whip. Decorations included Lifesaver Gummies, candy dots (a rainbow of colors that come on small sheets), and spiced gum drops for some of the feet - I let me kids pick the candy. Yes it was lots of sugar but we only celebrate once a year, so go for it!

I made this for my daughter's birthday. I used strawberry cake mix (my daughter's choice) and vanilla frosting tinted green. I didn't do all the decorations, just the cookies as eyes and used a chewy fruit candy as the nose and candles as antennas! Everybody loved it and it was delicious!!!
