what you need

plastic drinking straw

individually wrapped , Cherry and Pineapple Flavors (sold in bag)

piece ribbon, yarn or shoestring licorice (about 6 to 8 inch)

Make It

PREHEAT oven to 325°F. Cover baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Cut a 1-1/2-inch-long piece from straw; set aside. Discard remaining length of straw. Unwrap candies; arrange in 6-inch-long candy cane shape on prepared baking sheet, alternating the candy flavors.

BAKE 3 min. or until candies are just melted. (Watch carefully through oven door and remove candy ornament from oven as soon as the candies are melted.) Remove ornament from oven. Spray one end of the straw piece with cooking spray. Use to make a hole about 1/2 inch from the top of the ornament by pressing the straw into the ornament. Let stand until ornament is completely cooled, frequently twisting the straw to prevent the straw from sticking to the ornament. Gently remove the straw.

THREAD the ribbon through the hole in the top of the ornament to use for hanging.

Cooking Know-How

Only prepare 1 ornament at a time on each baking sheet. Since the candies melt at different rates, baking more than 1 at a time could cause some ornaments to overbake. Ornaments are fragile. If ornament cracks, place pieces back together and return to oven just until pieces are melted back together. (Remove straw from ornament before returning ornament to oven.)

my boys ,age 5 and 8, and even my 14 year old niece had great fun making all the life saver ornaments. the only thing we did not like was using a straw to make the whole. we could not get the straw out. we used a toothpick and shaped a hole while the ornaments were still warm from the oven and it worked much better.

The kids and I loved this project. We also experienced some cracking when attempting to remove the straw. In our second attempt, I waited a few minutes to insert the straw, then removed it before the ornament was completely cooled. This left the perfect hole without the cracking! We watched the oven very closely because some designs were ready in only 2-3 minutes, others took 5 or 6.

These looked and sounded very easy to make when I read the directions. What you didn't tell us was the trick to making the holes. If you left the straw in until the ornament completely cooled then the ornament would crack when you tried to remove the straw. The swirling was also very difficult and didn't look like they sounded in the magazine. The baking time had to be very precise as well or you would get really melted ornaments.

I think this idea was very cute, my Daughters and I went crazy, we made a bunch of different shapes once we got the technique down pat, the straw removal sounded to be a problem for some people, all we did was fill the lids to the canola oil bottle up with oil and dip the straw into it before making our hole in the ornament, the look great on the tree.

This is a cute way to make ornaments, it takes a little while to get it down and you will probably screw up the first three or four, but it gets easier. The straw is difficult to work, but if you spray it with PAM it works a whole lot better. I also only used 5 lifesavers to make the candy canes. They were easier to work with

While they didn't quit look like the picture these were a lot of fun to make! I got the straws out pretty easy by letting a drop of water down the straw disolve the candy inside of it... a little twist and they were out. Very festive!

It is a great idea. I found two things helpful when making them. I had read other cooks saying how hard it was for the straw to come out. So, I sprayed Pam on the straw before inserting it into the hot candy. Also, I read how the candy was sticky after it cooled. So, I dipped them in Christmas colored glitter and they looked great. I made candy canes, christmas trees, wreaths and gingerbread men.

My daughters did this one and the life saver wreath in preschool. It was so simple and they loved them. In fact they want to make more for Christmas presents.

Very fun however, I had a hard time at first...completely melted the candy and then the straw got stuck and broke the candy cane! I used oil on the straw and that worked great and after a few minutes baking I found you almost have to stare at the candy. The only complaint is they are SO STICKY!
