What You Need

Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder

OREO Cookies, divided

1-1/2

cups flour

tsp. CALUMET Baking Powder

tsp. baking soda

eggs, separated

cup granulated sugar

2/3

cup butter or margarine, softened, divided

cup water

1/2

cup BREAKSTONE'S or KNUDSEN Sour Cream

oz. BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted

2-1/2

tsp. vanilla, divided

pkg. (16 oz.) powdered sugar, divided

Tbsp. milk

Chocolate Glaze

Make It

HEAT oven to 350°F.

SPRAY 2 (9-inch) round pans with cooking spray; dust with cocoa powder. Coarsely chop 7 cookies; set aside. Finely crush remaining cookies; place in medium bowl. Add flour, baking powder and soda; mix well.

BEAT egg whites in small bowl with mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form; set aside. Beat granulated sugar, 1/3 cup butter and egg yolks in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Add flour mixture, water, sour cream, melted chocolate and 1 tsp. vanilla; beat on medium speed 1 min. Gently stir in egg whites until well blended. Pour into prepared pans.

BAKE 25 min. or until toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 min. Remove from pans to wire racks; cool completely.

BEAT 1 cup powdered sugar with remaining butter and vanilla in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Add remaining powdered sugar alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. Reserve 1/2 cup frosting.

STACK cake layers on plate, filling with remaining frosting and chopped cookies. Spread top with Chocolate Glaze. Let stand 10 min. Decorate with reserved frosting. Keep refrigerated.

this is cute! not very hard. comment to the person who said the icing didn't turn out: try a different frosting recipe, then! that's what i'd do. try it....

The cake part of this cake turned out but neither of the frostings did. I was very disappointed with this recipe. I will make it again only not the frosting I will make my own to go with it. The frosting for the middle was yellow, runny and to surgary. And the chocolate glaze did not turn out either.

The cake portion of this recipe is outstanding. I usually prefer white or yellow cakes, but this was moist and had wonderful chocolate flavor without being too strong. I changed the icing a little by adding half of the recipe icing to an equal amount of cool whip. I then added finely crushed oreos to that and iced the entire cake with it. The best chocolate cake I've ever had!
