Star fruit is also called carambola. When sliced, this fruit resembles a star shape. The skin is green to golden yellow in color and the flavor ranges from tart to sweet depending on the variety. Look for it in your local supermarket. Choose a firm fruit with a bright even color and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
When purchasing fresh melons, it's key to find those that are perfectly ripe. Choose melons that feel heavy for their size, and avoid any that appear shriveled or have soft spots. When ripe, cantaloupe and honeydew should give off a sweet aroma, and will yield slightly when pressed at the blossom end. Watermelon should have a smooth, waxy surface and a creamy-colored underside. If the underside is white or greenish, the watermelon is not ripe.
