Rated 5 out of 5 by from I read the previous reviews prior to making this. I read the previous reviews prior to making this. Instead of boiling the potatoes I steamed them. I did not want them to be mushy. You can steam on the stove or in Ziploc steamer bags either choice worked great. Also I melted the cheese, milk and seasoning before mixing them into the potatoes. My family absolutely went nuts over this recipe. The agree with my idea to not boil the potatoes, it help keep their consistancy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you love cheesy potatoes, you'll love this recipe! If you love cheesy potatoes, you'll love this recipe! It does not look the picture, but tastes better than it looks. We also tried to vary the recipe: we have used an added 1/2 cup fat free sour cream to the recipe - VERY good, we've tried replacing milk with soy milk - also good - can't tell the difference, and also have added 6 oz vanilla yogurt for a tasty kick.

I first read all the reviews about this dish and then made sure I only boiled the potatoes for 8 min., and then I added all the other ingredients with the exception of only putting in 1/2 tsp of the ground mustard. I must say, this was very very good! The onions and the mustard gave it a lot of flavor and the taste was perfect! Loved it!

I read the reviews and decided to give this one a try even though most said it did not turn out anything like the photo. Not only was that true for me but it in no way can be considered potatoes au gratin. I took the advice of some where they suggested not boiling the potatoes as long and I even added some cayenne pepper instead of regular pepper to help with the taste factor. I added a little extra milk and some regular chedder cheese (less than a 1/4 cup) to help too but to no avail. I didn't however pre melt the cheese before adding combining and perhaps that may have made a little bit of difference. Overall, it was aweful. It came out of the oven looking exactly the way i had put it in with the exception that the cheese squares had melted and settled to the bottom. I mixed it up just to see if it could be salvaged and still all I had was some sliced potatoes with no coating to them. I am really not sure how this could have a 4 star rating. aweful in every sense of the word!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This was a big hit! This was a big hit! After reading all the comments about it not looking pretty, I decided to dice the potatoes instead of slicing them and I melted the Velveeta with skim milk and the sour cream and drizzled it between layers of potato. YUMMY!! (and YES it looked pretty!!)
