What You Need

pkg. (12 oz.) prepared pound cake

cup thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping

1/2

tsp. food coloring, any color

piece chewy fruit snack roll (5 inch), cut into 4 lengthwise strips

OREO Cookies

yellow candy-coated chocolate pieces

Tbsp. decorating icing, multiple colors

Make It

PLACE cake on cutting board; cut into pieces as shown in diagram to resemble a race car.

TINT whipped topping with food coloring; spread evenly over cake.

DECORATE top of cake with fruit roll strips to resemble racing stripes and front grille of the car. Place 2 cookies on each side of car for the wheels. Place yellow chocolate pieces on front and back of car to resemble headlights and taillights. Draw windows on car and write the child's age on top of cake with icing. Use remaining icing to decorate cake as desired. Store in refrigerator.

If the cake is very soft and crumbly, apply a “crumb coating” to prevent cake crumbs from mixing with the frosting. Spread a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake, then let stand 5 to 10 min. or until frosting is set. Spread remaining frosting over cake.

I followed the recipe and carved it into Lightening McQueen. The kids and grown-ups were in awe of the carving and decoration but no one was really in awe with the cake. I would recommend making my own cake next time but following everything else in the ingredients.

I used this recipe to make Lighten' Mc Queen from the movie Cars. I would recommend using frosting rather cool whip. Cool whip is not firm enough. Also, I used 6 drops of food coloring and it was pink. I had to use so much food coloring, more like 40 drops,I wasn't sure it would be safe to eat!! He came out cute. Used the excess cake as a spoiler and stuck it back in with toothpicks.

Cute cake. Not as good as a homemade cake, but it's easy to make and kids like it!

My son loves the movie Cars. So my hubby and I had a date night project and made 2 of these as a surprise for his birthday - a Lightning McQueen & a Sally. They were the hit of the party! We used regular frosting, as the cakes were going to be sitting out for awhile. Adults and kids all loved them!

My mom made this birthday cake for my son's 3rd birthday. Everyone at the party loved it and it turned out really cute. The one thing that did happen to the cake is that the car started to separate before serving but it still tasted great. I would recommend keeping it in the refrigator until time to serve because it seemed that the frosting did not stick too well or put some toothpicks in it to keep it together (take toothpicks out first though!)
