  • Combine flour, dry pudding mix and baking soda. Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with mixer until light and fluffy. Blend in egg, chocolate and vanilla. Gradually beat in flour mixture.
  • Shape dough into 2 (6-inch) logs. Roll, 1 at a time, in nonpareils until evenly coated. Wrap individually in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm.
  • Heat oven to 350ºF. Cut each roll into 27 slices. Place, 2 inches apart, on parchment-covered baking sheets.
  • Bake 8 to 10 min. or until cookies are slightly firm to the touch. Cool 1 min. on baking sheets. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.

Use Butter in Cookie Recipes

For best results, do not substitute margarine for the butter in cookie recipes as it will cause the dough to spread excessively on the baking sheet as the cookies bake.

How to Store Cookies

Airtight plastic storage containers and resealable plastic bags will help keep cookies fresh longer. Metal tins are also good if the lids seal tightly. Let cookies cool completely before storing. Store crisp and soft cookies in separate containers or the crisp cookies will also become soft.

To make these more "festive," I added 1/2 tsp. of Peppermint Extract to the dough (along with the 1 tsp. of vanilla) & rolled them in crushed candy canes instead of sprinkles. Turned out fantastic!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy and Festive! Made these last night and they were easy, pretty and tasty! It was a bit difficult to make the dough into the two rolls, as the dough was very soft. I didn't add flour because I didn't want the cookies to be tough. Chilling the dough a bit before making the rolls would help. I would prefer a measurement on slicing the cookies (i.e., 1/4 inch thick) rather than "slice into 27 slices." Overall, a good cookie and easy to make!
