  • Combine first 6 ingredients in slow cooker; cover with lid. Cook on LOW 8 to 10 hours (or on HIGH 4 hours). Discard bay leaves.
  • Mix eggs, stuffing mix and water; shape into 8 balls. Add cream cheese spread to slow cooker; stir until melted. Gently stir in stuffing balls; cook, covered, on HIGH 30 min.
  • Turn off slow cooker. Let stand 15 min. Serve stew and dumplings topped with chives.

Cooking Know-How

Taking the lid off your slow cooker for even just a minute reduces the heat and extends the cooking time. Lift the lid only if instructed to do so in the recipe.

Slow-Cooker Size

Slow cookers come in a variety of sizes and shapes. For best results, use an oval 5-qt. slow cooker when preparing this recipe so the dumplings have room to expand, resulting in fluffier dumplings.

Special Extra

For easy cleanup, line slow cooker with plastic liner bag before filling with ingredients and cooking as directed.

Substitute

Prepare using a boneless pork shoulder.

How to Easily Shape the Stuffing Balls

Use moistened hands to shape the stuffing mixture into balls to help prevent it from sticking to your hands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This I have made a couple of times now, and as I do not like celery that is cooked I changed to... This I have made a couple of times now, and as I do not like celery that is cooked I changed to leeks, I also purchased Pork cuttings which are cheap from the butcher, has quite a lot of meat. First time I sadly had no dumplings, but was gorgeous on its own, the 2nd time I made vegetable dumplings, and added cauliflower as I wanted more veggies in this dish, but for sure is gorgeous flavors before you add the ***** cheese, but wow, after, incredible. Now I have to eat gluten free I am checking out to make Gluten free dumplings but am sure will not change the flavor of this great dish. Am sure even without the Pork if you cannot eat pork then choose a beef or even Quorn. This is a must for everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The recipe concept is great! The recipe concept is great!I used pork butt cut in cubes for much more flavor& texture meat needs a little fat to be good i also cooked this in top of stove in my big heavy dutch oven the stew needs to be simmering when you add the dumplings or they will fall apart I didnt have ang chive cream cheese spread so I added regular cream cheese( cubed it up first) & small chopped onion & 2 minced garlic Came out wonderful Everyone loved it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I cooked this in this crockpot per the recipe directions, not on the stove. I cooked this in this crockpot per the recipe directions, not on the stove. I put in the dumplings and they did not fall apart nor was their flavor overwhelming. I'm not sure what happened with the other reviewers. The only thing I did different was add a couple cloves of fresh garlic. This will definitely be made again. We may try it with the pork flavored stuffing next time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This was an excellent recipe until i added the dumplings. This was an excellent recipe until i added the dumplings. i would recommend preparing them separately and then adding them at the diner's discretion. the stuffing flavor was overwhelming to the rest of the meal when cooked in the slow cooker and they fell apart when we tried to get them out. Otherwise, it was amazing!
