French onion soup from scratch? Yes, and it only takes 15 minutes to prepare. It's simply outstanding after a long, slow simmer in the slow cooker.

What You Need

lb.  onions, sliced, separated into rings

Tbsp.  brown sugar

Tbsp.  KRAFT Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing

Tbsp.  Worcestershire sauce

qt.  (6 cups) fat-free reduced-sodium beef broth

cups  water
1
bottle  (12 oz.) beer
1
Tbsp.  chopped fresh thyme

 French bread baguette slices (1/2 inch thick), toasted

cups  KRAFT Shredded Swiss Cheese

Make It

COMBINE first 4 ingredients in slow cooker; cover with lid. Cook on HIGH 1 hour, stirring after 30 min.

TURN heat down to LOW. Add broth, water, beer and thyme to slow cooker; stir. Cover with lid. Cook on LOW 6 to 8 hours (or on HIGH 4 hours).

HEAT broiler. Ladle soup into 10 ovenproof bowls; top with toast slices and cheese. Broil, 6 inches from heat, 3 to 5 min. or until cheese is melted and golden brown.

Substitute
Prepare using your favorite non-alcoholic beer.
Special Extra
For more flavor, add 1 bay leaf to cooked onions with the broth, water, beer and thyme. Discard bay leaf before ladling soup into bowls.
Serving Suggestion
Serve with a crisp green salad tossed with your favorite KRAFT Dressing.
