  • Combine first 4 ingredients in slow cooker; cover with lid. Cook on HIGH 1 hour, stirring after 30 min.
  • Turn heat down to LOW. Add broth, water, beer and thyme to onions in slow cooker; stir. Cook, covered, 6 to 8 hours (or on HIGH 4 hours).
  • Heat broiler. Ladle soup into 10 ovenproof bowls; top with toast slices and cheese. Broil, 6 inches from heat, 3 to 5 min. or until cheese is melted and golden brown.

Note

While any variety of non-alcoholic beer can be used to prepare this soup, an amber or dark non-alcoholic beer produces a richer flavor.

Serving Suggestion

Serve with a crisp green salad tossed with your favorite KRAFT Dressing.

Special Extra

For more flavor, add 1 bay leaf to cooked onions in slow cooker along with the broth, water, beer and thyme. Discard bay leaf before ladling soup into bowls.

I followed this recipe to the letter, and unfortunately, my family thought it was awful. It didn't taste anything like French onion soup, in fact it tasted very bitter with little to no flavor.

I plan to make this, but I will caramelize my onions my onions on the stove top the night before to make my morning prep quick & easy before leaving for work. I'll follow the rest of the recipe as written. French Onion soup is a favorite of mine, so I'm looking forward to making it in my slow cooker this fall.
