Make It

Tap or click steps to mark as complete

  • Combine first 4 ingredients in slow cooker; cover with lid. Cook on HIGH 1 hour, stirring after 30 min.
  • Reduce heat to LOW. Add broth, water, beer and thyme to onions in slow cooker; stir. Cook, covered, 6 to 8 hours (or on HIGH 4 hours).
  • Heat broiler. Ladle soup into 10 ovenproof bowls; top with toast slices and cheese. Broil, 6 inches from heat, 3 to 5 min. or until cheese is melted and golden brown.

Note

While any variety of non-alcoholic beer can be used to prepare this soup, an amber or dark non-alcoholic beer produces a richer flavor.

Serving Suggestion

Serve with a crisp green salad tossed with your favorite KRAFT Dressing.

Special Extra

For easy cleanup, line slow cooker with plastic liner bag before filling with ingredients and cooking as directed.

Ratings & Reviews

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible. Terrible. Too watery after 7 hours in the slow cooker, too sweet (must be the brown sugar)....I even tried to add more broth and salt and pepper. The best part was the French bread and Swiss cheese...I should have made a grilled Swiss cheese sandwich. I threw the whole thing out....what a waste of time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolutely awful! Absolutely awful! Cooked all day and tasted like onion water. The next day, put it in a pot on the stove to try and "save" it, as to not waste. Added about a cup of dry sherry, black pepper, a couple of bay leaves, a little garlic powder and a jar of beef gravy. It was better, but not as good as starting on the stove from scratch. Will never make again.

Looking at the recipe ingredients, I can tell it's no-where near the ingredients needed to make French onion soup. And from the reviews, I also won't be ****** it using these ingredients. I will, however, be using a recipe for French onion soup by Julia Child. It's more complicated, but I want restaurant authentic taste/flavor . This is the 1st recipe from Kraft that I simply do not want to taste let alone make.

I plan to make this, but I will caramelize my onions my onions on the stove top the night before to make my morning prep quick & easy before leaving for work. I'll follow the rest of the recipe as written. French Onion soup is a favorite of mine, so I'm looking forward to making it in my slow cooker this fall.

I followed this recipe to the letter, and unfortunately, my family thought it was awful. It didn't taste anything like French onion soup, in fact it tasted very bitter with little to no flavor.
