  • Combine first 4 ingredients in slow cooker; cover with lid. Cook on HIGH 1 hour, stirring after 30 min.
  • Reduce heat to LOW. Add broth, water, beer and thyme to onions in slow cooker; stir. Cook, covered, 6 to 8 hours (or on HIGH 4 hours).
  • Heat broiler. Ladle soup into 10 ovenproof bowls; top with toast slices and cheese. Broil, 6 inches from heat, 3 to 5 min. or until cheese is melted and golden brown.

While any variety of non-alcoholic beer can be used to prepare this soup, an amber or dark non-alcoholic beer produces a richer flavor.

Serving Suggestion

Serve with a crisp green salad tossed with your favorite KRAFT Dressing.

Special Extra

For more flavor, add 1 bay leaf to cooked onions in slow cooker along with the broth, water, beer and thyme. Discard bay leaf before ladling soup into bowls.

When serving adults, prepare using regular beer if desired. Please use alcohol responsibly.

Terrible. Too watery after 7 hours in the slow cooker, too sweet (must be the brown sugar)....I even tried to add more broth and salt and pepper. The best part was the French bread and Swiss cheese...I should have made a grilled Swiss cheese sandwich. I threw the whole thing out....what a waste of time.
