What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) chocolate cake mix

pkg. (3.9 oz.) JELL-O Chocolate Instant Pudding

1/3

cup KOOL-AID Orange Flavor Sugar-Sweetened Soft Drink Mix

Tbsp. hot water

can (16 oz.) ready-to-spread white frosting

OREO Cookies

pieces black string licorice (32 inches each)

miniature candy-coated chocolate pieces

Make It

PREPARE cake batter as directed on package; blend in dry pudding mix. Spoon into 24 paper-lined muffin cups. Bake as directed on package for cupcakes. Cool completely.

DISSOLVE drink mix in hot water. Stir into frosting in bowl until well blended. Use to frost cupcakes, reserving some of the frosting for attaching the decorations.

CUT each licorice piece into 16 (2-inch) lengths; set aside. Place 1 cookie on top of each cupcake; insert 4 licorice pieces into frosting on each side of cookie for the spider's legs. Use reserved frosting to attach chocolate pieces to tops of cookies for the spiders' eyes.

Cupcakes were very good. However, we made them up the nite before, stored them in a carrier and when my daughter passed them out the next day, the cookie was soft and stale. I recommend not putting the cookie on the cupcake until you are ready to serve the treats.

These turned out very cute. I agree with many of the other reviews in that the decorating was time consuming. Some tips I found useful was buying the double stuffed oreo cookies and taking them apart, put the licorace legs in and then use some extra frosting to stick them back together. I also found refridgerating the frosting helped make it thicker in cosistency (it was little runny after adding the orange koolaid). And lastly, I found spinwheel black licorice in the bulk candy bins at a grocery store. These worked really well for the legs.

Very easy and fun to make. I didn't like the icing though. If I make it again I would just use food dye to get the orange color for the frosting the KOOL-AID mix made it way too sweet.

We are going to make only the oreo spiders for my grandaughter's school halloween carnival. All of the children in the classroom are going to join in and will be a class project.

I had a hard time finding the licorice so I bought licorice wheels, unrolled them, and cut them. They were curled on the ends which made a neat effect.

The cupcake part was good but there was no way to make the spiders. I just put the candy I would have used for the eyes on top and that was fine.

Good luck finding the black pull apart licorice, the only place I saw it was online and it was spendy. We tried red licorice and it just looked awful.

This is the second time I have made this for my daughter's Halloween class and it is a hit everytime. I agree with most of the posts, it's hard to find the pull-a-way black licorice, so I opted for the chocolate licorice. I cut one in half with scissors, then cut that piece for a thinner and smaller piece. I know that takes some time, but it works perfectly for the spider legs!
