Make It

Tap or click steps to mark as complete

  • Heat oven to 375°F.
  • Cut potatoes lengthwise in half; scoop out centers, leaving 1/4-inch-thick shells. (Reserve centers for another use.) Cut shells crosswise in half.
  • Place shells, skin-sides down, on baking sheet; brush insides of shells lightly with oil. Bake 15 min. or until golden brown.
  • Microwave CHEEZ WHIZ in microwaveable bowl on HIGH 3 min., stirring after 1-1/2 min. Spoon into potato shells; top with remaining ingredients.

Size Wise

Savor every bite of this warm appetizer. Each serving, 2 potato skins, goes a long way on flavor.

Shortcut

Prepare as directed, substituting frozen waffle fries or french fries for the baked potato shells. Bake fries as directed on package. Place on serving plate. Serve topped with remaining ingredients.

Make Ahead

Having a party? Bake the potatoes the day before to save time the day of the party. Refrigerate until ready to use as directed.

Substitute

To prepare using VELVEETA® instead of the CHEEZ WHIZ, cut 1/2 lb. (8 oz.) VELVEETA into 1/2-inch cubes; place in microwaveable bowl. Microwave on HIGH 3 min. or until melted, stirring after 1-1/2 min. Pour into potato shells, then top with remaining ingredients as directed.

Variation

To prepare using VELVEETA Shredded Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product instead of the melted CHEEZ WHIZ, sprinkle 2 cups shredded VELVEETA into the potato shells after the 15-min. baking time; bake an additional 5 min. or until VELVEETA is melted. Top with remaining ingredients as directed.

Substitute

Substitute 4 slices OSCAR MAYER Bacon, cooked and crumbled, for the bacon bits.

Ratings & Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These were a huge hit at my neighborhood party. These were a huge hit at my neighborhood party. I used 8 smaller potatoes and put them under the broiler at the end. I also used shredded cheese. I agree that they take longer than 30 min. to prepare, but are worth it in the end. If you are looking for a unique appetizer...this is the great one. Especially for football parties!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good! Very good! Much better than the frozen kind! I would make sure you serve them right away since as they cool off, the cheese starts to harden (I used Velveeta). I also sprinkled a little shredded sharp cheddar on them as soon as they came out of the oven. It added a little extra flavor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I make it a little different. I make it a little different. I use Kraft Shredded Cheddar Cheese and I fill the skins with the cheese before baking. Then after I take them out of the oven, I sprinkle them with the bacon and sliced green onion and dollop them with sour cream. So good!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from These were pretty good. These were pretty good. They could have cooked a little longer or added a little more oil to make them cook faster. By the time the bake time was done, they were still raw. I would make again though. They were a big hit at my super boal party!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from These were so easy to make! These were so easy to make! I will probably make them a lot for entertaining. I had all the extras on the side. I only put cheese on them after I took them out of the oven. Everyone loved them. They did not last long enough to get cold.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I made the skins for a Super Bowl party and they were a huge hit, especially with the guys! I made the skins for a Super Bowl party and they were a huge hit, especially with the guys! I found that browning the skins in the oven took a lot longer than 15 minutes, but it was worth it. I would also cut the potatoes in 8's next time instead of quarters because I felt the serving sizes were too large. I substituted chives for the green onions to give it a more authentic "baked potatoe" taste. It is a definite "cook again"!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Made this for the first time today and loved it. Made this for the first time today and loved it. My husband and daughter weren't too crazy about them, which absolutely surprised me. I even left some without sour cream for my husband. For a crispier skin, I rubbed oil on the potatoes, and then salted them before putting them in the over for an hour and 15 minutes. I followed the recipe exactly, however, next time I will be using shredded cheddar instead of the Cheez Whiz.
