Sweet & Salty Brownies

We started with a basic brownie and added a layer of gooey caramel and ground red pepper (cayenne ) for just a bit of heat. Your taste buds may never be the same!

What You Need

pkg. (4 oz.) BAKER'S Unsweetened Chocolate

3/4

cup butter or margarine

3/4

tsp. ground red pepper (cayenne)

cups sugar

eggs

cup flour

cup coarsely chopped PLANTERS Dry Roasted Peanuts, divided

KRAFT Caramels

Tbsp. milk

Make It

HEAT oven to 350ºF.

MICROWAVE chocolate and butter in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until butter is melted. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in pepper. Add sugar; mix well. Blend in eggs. Add flour; mix well. Stir in 1/2 cup nuts. Spread half the batter into 13x9-inch pan sprayed with cooking spray.

MICROWAVE caramels and milk in microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2-1/2 min., stirring after 1 min. Stir until caramels are completely melted and mixture is well blended; spread over brownie batter in pan. Cover with remaining brownie batter. (Some caramel sauce may peek through.) Sprinkle with remaining nuts.

BAKE 25 to 30 min. or until top is firm to the touch. Cool.

Note

It is important to add the ground red pepper right after you melt the chocolate. This ensures that the pepper is evenly distributed in the brownie batter.

Size-Wise

One serving goes a long way on chocolate flavor and can hit the spot when you are looking for a sweet treat.

Easy Cleanup

Line pan with foil, with ends of foil extending over sides. Spray with cooking spray. Use foil handles to lift brownie from pan before cutting to serve.

I was not impressed. The cayenne pepper gave the brownies a weird aftertaste. I personally don't like the mixture of the pepper and chocolate. I will make the recipe again, but not with the pepper!

I only added 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, and while the brownies tasted delicious, there was a definite burning feeling in the throat after eating them.....NOT pleasant! I am now in the process of making a second batch WITHOUT the cayenne pepper....I do not think it is a necessary ingredient!

This recipe is so easy to make. This is the first time, I heard of a brownies recipe calling for red pepper. The red pepper made the brownie more moist.

This is the first time I made brownies from scratch (or not from a box), and it was much easier than I thought it would be! I made these for a party and everyone raved about them. It was a little hard to spread the top layer over the caramel for me, so the caramel kinda blended into the top layer, but they still tasted good!

These were delicious! The cayenne pepper added an interesting kick. I had a lot of people try them...most were hesitant at first, but ended up really enjoying them! I've made them twice already and plan on making them again. Don't be scared to try them - you'll be surprised!
