  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Place water, 1/2 cup (1 stick) of the butter and 1-1/2 oz. of the chocolate in large saucepan. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in combined flour and granulated sugar. Add eggs, sour cream, baking soda and salt; mix well. Pour into greased and floured 15x10x1-inch baking pan.
  • Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • Place remaining 1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine, remaining 1-1/2 oz. chocolate and milk in large saucepan; bring to boil. Remove from heat. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until well blended after each addition. Mix in vanilla. Spread onto warm cake; sprinkle with pecans. Cool completely. Cut into 48 squares to serve.

Substitute

Substitute miniature semi-sweet chocolate chips for the pecans.

Special Extra

For easy cleanup, line baking pan with foil using this easy method.  Turn pan upside down and fit a piece of foil over top of pan, smoothing corners as needed.  Remove foil.  When you turn the pan over, the foil fits perfectly inside the pan.

I'm making it again for my grandparents' birthday party so that I can share it with them as well. I had read the reviews of it before I made it and saw that people found it to be a bit bland, so I added a little bit more chocolate and sugar to the recipe and it came out very rich. This is my new favorite chocolate cake.

Got better the second and third day. I did add a full 5 cups of powdered sugar to the frosting as it seemed thin and a little still ran off the sides of the pan until it set. I also used walnuts instead of pecans.

I have never had any leftover to take home or to give to someone. They ALWAYS get all eaten up! I first got this recipe from a friend and she made them for us girls at work as a real treat.

There was also this strange floury aftertaste. The cake was super moist and fluffy. 5 stars for texture but 2 or 3 for taste. There are just other cakes out there that taste better.
