  • Cook bacon in skillet on medium heat until crisp. Add garlic; cook and stir 1 min.
  • Add beans, 1 cup at a time, mashing beans well after each addition. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook until bean mixture is consistency of a thick paste. If bean mixture is too dry, gradually stir in reserved bean broth until mixture is of desired consistency. Discard any remaining bean broth.
  • Season bean mixture with salt to taste; sprinkle with cheese.

Substitute 2 cans (15 oz. each) refried beans for the cooked dried beans. Add to cooked bacon and garlic; cook until heated through, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with cheese.

    Good alternative to canned refried beans if you are on a salt-restricted diet, but only when using the dry beans. I used my food processor instead of manually mashing the beans, and it was super easy.
