Make It

Tap or click steps to mark as complete

  • Line 13x9-inch pan with foil; spray with cooking spray. Prepare cake batter and bake in prepared pan as directed on package. Cool completely.
  • Invert cake onto platter; remove pan and foil. Use serrated knife to cut 1/2-inch-wide strip off each side of cake. Cut each strip lengthwise in half; set aside.
  • Spread trimmed cake with 1-1/2 cups COOL WHIP. Stack cake strips around outside edges of cake to make rim; frost rim with remaining COOL WHIP. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Add boiling water to gelatin mix in large bowl; stir 2 min. until completely dissolved. Add ice; stir until gelatin begins to thicken. Remove any unmelted ice. Pour gelatin into center of cake as shown in photo. Refrigerate 4 hours or until gelatin is firm. Decorate with remaining ingredients to resemble an aquarium as shown in photo.

Cooking Know-How

Make sure cakes are completely cooled before frosting. A warm cake can cause the frosting to soften or melt.

Easy Cleanup

Lining the baking pan with foil makes for easy cleanup and easy removal of the cake from the baking pan.

Substitute

Prepare using your favorite flavor of cake mix.

Baking cakes for children is what I love to do and have had plenty of experience over the years. This cake caught my curiosity. The cake is easy. The decorating requires plenty of patience and lots of time - not 35 mins. Moving cake in and out of refrig is tricky. Decorating for someone inexperienced is a challenge since you leave directions out i.e. what do you need nilla wafers for? what are the jelly beans for? and the fruit roll-ups?? My niece (age 17) was looking at this with me and she had plenty of questions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from this cake is so easy. this cake is so easy. I made it for my daughters 13th birthday. everybody was impressed. The directions are a little unclear on the building of the cake but what is wonderful about this recipe is it is hard to mess up. It is fun to make not to mention it makes you look like a professional baker. I highly recommend this recipe.

But........the assembly seems a bit confusing. Is it possible to add a video or step by step pictures of how to cut, frost and assemble the cake??? From there, the jello filling and decorating should be a breeze.

The Cool Whip, jello and cake is a good combination. I'm making it again for a swim meet but turning it into a swimming pool with lanes. I'm thinking of using fondant for swimmers.......
