Substitute fresh pears for the apples.
The sliced apples are tossed with some of the dry cake mix before placing them on top of the cake batter in the pan to prevent them from sinking to the bottom of the pan as the cake bakes.

I found this to be much too sweet. The carmel overtook everything else. Couldn't even tell there were apples with so much carmel. The idea is good, but if I ever made this again (???) I would never us so much carmel. My guest did not finish theirs, so what does that tell you. Sorry...toooo much carmel and toooo sweet.
Very disappointed. I baked it only 50 minutes, cake was dry and it was tasteless. The topping was way too sweet. Over all, not worth the time and money, won't make again.
