  • Heat oven to 350°F.
  • Microwave chocolate, 1/2 cup sugar and water in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until chocolate is almost melted, stirring after 1 min. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Cool.
  • Mix flour, baking soda and salt. Beat butter and remaining sugar in large bowl with mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each until well blended. Beat in flour mixture alternately with milk. Add chocolate mixture and vanilla; mix well. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9-inch round pans.
  • Bake 30 to 35 min. or until toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 min.; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Fill and frost with Easy Chocolate Frosting.

Cook chocolate and water in medium saucepan on very low heat just until chocolate is melted, stirring constantly. Add 1/2 cup sugar; cook 2 min., stirring constantly. Cool to lukewarm. Continue as directed.

I was a little skeptic about trying this recipe at first since I usually hesitate in trying something that no one has recommended me. I took my chances since it has a good rating. This recipe turned out to be great. The cake is decadent and definitely for chocolate lovers. Very moist. The frosting was a bit on the sweet side for me, but even so... it was great! Tip: I made a cupcake on the side just to try what it was going to be like (since it was a birthday cake), it was good, but it taste better the next day when the flavors set. I WILL make again soon. Thanks for the recipe!!!

I have made it for several years and it has been a huge hit at work and family functions. Even self proclaimed cake haters at work caught wind of it and tried it. All loved it and one demanded the recipe. It's quite rich and delicious. It is so easy to do and has been perfect each time. It will absolutely kick your hosting up a notch. I get we all have different taste but I assure you this cake is exponentially better than a mix. ;-)

In eighth grade I got on a kick of trying different chocolate cake recipes whenever my mom would tolerate my monopolizing the kitchen on winter Saturday afternoons. This was and still is my favorite. It was just a recipe on the back of the Baker's chocolate box, or maybe it was Hershey's Cocoa. But it got the best reviews in the house, over any that came of out the popular cookbooks of the day. Brings back fond memories to see it here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DELICIOUS and SO moist! DELICIOUS and SO moist! Baked it for the first time for a birthday party and got so many compliments. Instead of the 3/4 cups milk, I put 1/2 cup Bailey's Irish Creme and only 1/4 cup milk. This added some great flavor. My only complaint is that the cake is SO moist that one layer stuck to my pan and was very difficult to work with. I highly recommend lining the bottom of the pans with parchment paper for this recipe.

This cake was delicious, however, it takes a REALLY long time to make and uses lots of dishes, so there is a lot of cleaning up afterward. I made it for my birthday party and everyone loved it, but I don't think that I'll make it again because there are so many other great cakes on this website that don't require near the amount of effort that this one did.

I made it for my hubby and it's the only chocolate cake I make now. It's easy to stir up the batter and it always comes out moist and chocolatey. We love it! I haven't tried the accompanying frosting. I just use a cocoa buttercream.

I made this to take to work for my boss's birthday and everyone, including my boss, just loved it! The icing was a little tough to spread, so I whipped a little more milk into it to make it creamier. It went on just fine after that.
