  • Heat grill for indirect grilling: Light one side of grill, leaving other side unlit. Close lid; heat grill to 350ºF.
  • Trim and discard excess fat from chickens. Squeeze lemon juice into small bowl; reserve lemon halves. Add barbecue sauce and seasoning to juice; mix well. Place 2 each lemon halves and garlic cloves inside each chicken cavity.
  • Place chickens, breast-sides up, on grate over unlit area; cover. Grill 1-1/2 to 2 hours or until chicken is done (165°F), turning and brushing occasionally with sauce for the last 20 min. Remove and discard lemon halves and garlic from chickens before serving.

Special Extra

Garnish with additional lemons and roasted garlic. Lemon wedges can be grilled for 5 min. alongside chicken to bring out their sweetness.

Substitute

Substitute 1 large chicken (4 to 5 lb.) for the 2 smaller chickens. Grill 1 hour 45 min. to 2 hours or until chicken is done (165°F). Makes 10 servings.

How to Grill on a Charcoal Grill

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good! Very good! The chicken came out so moist. I used garlic powder in place of cloves since I did not have any on hand. I cooked in the oven at 300 for about 20 minutes before putting on the grill. When I do it again, I'll up that to about 35 minutes to prevent some overcooking on the skin. My 4lb chicken took only about an hour and 10 minutes. I think cooking it ahead of time a little cut down on the total cook time, plus every grill is different. So just keep an eye on it.

This recipe was very good the only thing that did differently was that I seasoned the outside of the chicken with seaoned salt and garlic powder. I also roasted it in the oven. The chicken was tender and juicy. The next time I make the recipe I will baste it with more BBQ sauce.

I did season the chicken with some spices such as Emeril Lagasse's Essence which gave the chicken great flavor. I also mixed the barbecue sauce with Kraft's Molasses Barbecue sauce. Very tasty! This was an easy recipe to make, and I am going to share it with friends and family.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I generally smoke my chicken. I generally smoke my chicken. Takes a lot more time. But this is really good, also. Loved your "how to cut it up" segment, but would liked to have seen complete cutting of chicken. Keep up the good work and thanks to Kraft and all their great products. Jeff D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've made this a few times already, my husband especially loves it. I've made this a few times already, my husband especially loves it. I also change up the ingredients a bit...sometimes I use oranges instead of lemons, sometimes I use other spices instead of italian spices and garlic, etc. I'm making this for dinner tonight!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely heavenly! Absolutely heavenly! I am not the greatest cook - and definitely not when it comes to using the grill (I always over-cook on the grill), but this recipe is amazing and made me look like a pro! I am sending this to three of my friends. Will make again soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This chicken is excellent. This chicken is excellent. I made it with a few changes. My family was cleaning the bones! I start adding to the cavity some thyme. Then, I brush the chicken with 2 tbsp melted butter, mix with 1 tbsp oil and add salt and pepper to all sides and cavity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very moist and juicy chicken! Very moist and juicy chicken! I grilled fresh veggies along side during the last 15 minutes. I served with garlic bread & butter. Add savory rice or baked potato and keep the house cooler! I will make this again well into the Fall here in Michigan. Ted
