Makeover - How We Did It

We made over a favorite KRAFT recipe. Save 90 calories and 14g of fat, including 4g of saturated fat, per serving by preparing with extra-lean ground beef instead of 80% lean ground beef and fat-free milk, and using KRAFT Lite Zesty Italian Dressing and KRAFT Deluxe Macaroni & Cheese Dinner Made with 2% Milk Cheese instead of the regular products.

Substitute

Substitute 1 can (12 oz.) white tuna in water, drained, for the cooked ground beef.

Make Ahead

Prepare as directed except for baking. Refrigerate up to 24 hours. When ready to serve, bake, covered, in 375°F oven 40 to 45 min. or until heated through. Remove from oven; top with remaining cheese. Let stand (uncovered) 5 min. or until cheese is melted.

Ratings & Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This recipe was very boring. This recipe was very boring. I thought the Zesty Italian Dressing would make it taste great, but I thought it was very blah. I cooked the beef with garlic, but it needs more spice. I only used broccoli and cauliflower, and my husband thought it had WAY too many vegetables in it, although usually when I put those vegetables in things he eats them with no problem. I couldn't get him to eat any of the leftovers, so I guess I won't make it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This was okay. This was okay. My picky 2 year old liked it. My husband seemed to. I wasn't won over. There was very little flavor. In all fairness, I used mild cheddar instead of sharp but still. I will make this again but when I do I'll add onion, garlic, and maybe omit the milk. It seemed to dilute the cheeses too much. I had to add A LOT of hot sauce to this recipe. Also, I put it in a bigger casserole dish so it would heat all the way through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is really great with some modifications. This is really great with some modifications. I increased the cheese to 1-1/2 cups, increased the milk to 1 cup, added 1/4 cup mayo, 2 tsp dijon mustard, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, and seasoned the beef with seasoned salt and pepper after cooking. It was creamy, cheesy, and delicious and so inexpensive to make.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from BLAND! BLAND! This recipe did not have any flavor! I will make again and add more cheese and some sort of extra flavoring. I noticed some people cooked the meat with garlic I may try that. This recipe has potential it just needs more flavor for my taste.

I used boca crumbles instead of ground beef to make this even lighter...it was just ok. After my husband added a little Red Hot sauce, it tasted much better. If I made it again, I might add some diced tomatoes or something. I won't make it again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very blah; needs more moisture and flavor. Very blah; needs more moisture and flavor. I took this dish to a potluck and it was a bomb. Most of this casserole was uneaten whereas all the other dishes were scraped clean. Even jazzing up some of the leftovers didn't help.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It was just ok. It was just ok. The sauce wasn't that good but it wasn't that bad either. It was little watery and not as creamy was I thought it would be. Again it wasn't horrible but it wasn't good either, so I will not make it again.

Another note: I redeemed the leftovers by stirring in some mayo (Miracle Whip) mixed with Italian dressing from an envelope. Will do this first (instead of the milk and liquid dressing) next time as it's much better!
