Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 2 loaf pans. Cream together: sugar, shortening, eggs and softened cream cheese. Sift together: flour, salt, baking soda and add to creamed mixture. Add bananas to above mixture and beat on slow until smooth. Add nuts if desired.
Divide batter into 2 loaf pans.
Bake for 1 hour. Check center with toothpick to check if done.
