Sift together in mixing bowl, the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add the shortening (vegetable oil works fine), egg, and milk. Mix together with blending fork or pastry blender. Then stir just until ingredients are blended.
Fill greased muffin cups 2/3 full.
Bake 20 to 25 min. or until golden brown at 400 degrees F. Watch carefully, different ovens take different times.
