Original recipe yields 1 serving
3 Tbsp shortening
1/4 cup green pepper
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 1/2 cups okra
2 1/2 cups canned tomatoes
1 bay leaf
Pinch of thyme
2 Tbsp parsley
16 ounces crab meat
1 cup shrimp (or more to taste)
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 tsp filé powder
1 1/2 cups water

Saute green pepper, onion, and okra until soft, not brown.

Add tomatoes, bay leaf, thyme, and parsley. Cook very slowly for 1/2 hour.

Add crabmeat, shrimp, salt and pepper, filé, and water. Cook slowly for 1/2 hour. Stir occasionally. Remove and discard bay leaf. Serve over cooked rice.
