Beat shortening and sugar in large bowl until fluffy. Stir in eggs, pumpkin, and water, mixing well. Add flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and cloves gradually, mixing well. Stir in nuts and/or raisins.
Grease and flour two large loaf pans, and fill 3/4 full with mixture.
Bake in center rack of preheated 350 degree F oven for 1 hour, 10 minutes, or until loaf tests done. Cool on wire racks.
