Beat egg. Stir in sugar, sour milk, and suet. Mix in flour, spices, and baking soda. Add raisins if desired.
Place in a glass Pyrex baking dish. Seal with lid or aluminum foil. Steam in a larger pan with enough water to not boil dry and not get into pudding. Steam for 3 hours.
Combine in a saucepan, sugar, flour, nutmeg, salt, vinegar, & water. Boil till thickened. Serve over hot pudding.
