Cream butter and sugar; add egg. Beat until light and fluffy. Stir flour with spices and baking soda; add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Cover; chill until firm (about 2 hours).
On floured surface, roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees F till lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes; remove to rack. If desired decorate with icing.
