Original recipe yields 1 serving
2 cups lukewarm water
2 Tbsp shortening
1 Tbsp salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg
1 pkg dry yeast dissolved in 1/4 cup lukewarm water
2 cups rye flour
6 cups white flour

Mix warm water, shortening, salt, sugar, molasses and egg together. Add yeast mixture and rye flour. Mix well and add remaining white flour a cup at a time.

Turn out on floured board and kneed until no longer sticky. Put in greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled--about 4 hours. Punch down and make into loaves. Put in greased bread pans and let rise until doubled.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from pans at once and grease tops and sides of bread. Let cool.
