Base: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Blend flour, butter, brown sugar, and salt till crumbly. Press firmly into 9x13 baking dish. Bake 10 minutes.
Filling: Cook pineapple with liquid, sugar, cornstarch, water, egg yolks till it thickens; add cherries. Spread on cooled base.
Topping: Beat egg whites till they are stiff. Add 1/4 cup sugar a little at a time. Add 1/8 tsp. of salt and vanilla. Spread topping over filling put under broiler till golden brown. Cool and cut into squares.
