Preheat oven to 325 degrees F and grease the bottom of a 10” tube pan. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda, set aside. Cream 2 cups sugar with 1 cup butter. Add unbeaten eggs one at a time to butter mixture and blend. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk to butter mixture until completely blended together.
Pour batter into tube pan and bake 60-65 minutes. Remove cake from oven and let cool for 10 minutes.
Combine the first 3 sauce ingredients in a small pan and heat and stir just until butter melts – do not boil. Add vanilla to the sauce and blend. Use a spatula to loosen the cake from the sides and center of the tube pan. Prick the cake multiple times with a large-pronged fork. Slowly and evenly pour the sauce over the cake. Remove from pan when cold and sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
