Let's Make It
1
In saucepan scald milk and shortening. Set aside to cool. Mix yeast, 1 tsp. sugar with the lukewarm water, set aside. Put shortening and milk in large bowl, add 1 1/2 cups water, salt, remaining sugar and beat well. Add yeast mixture and continue to beat at least 1-2 min. Add 4 cups flour and beat. The more you beat, the better it is. Keep adding flour until a soft, semi-stiff dough, even if you don't use all flour.
2
Grease top with oil, cover, let rise until double, punch down and knead, adding more flour as needed. Let rise again, punch down and make into 5 loaves. Put in greased loaf pans, cover & let rise till size want.
3
Bake in preheated oven (375 degrees F) until golden brown, around 45 min. Transfer to wire rack and grease tops with margarine or oil. Let cool. Store in freezer up to 1 month.
