Original recipe yields 1 serving
1 beef brisket (5 lb.), well trimmed
1 Tbsp liquid smoke, or more
Rub:
1 tsp salt
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dry mustard
Sauce:
4 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup onions, chopped
4 Tbsp garlic, minced
2 tsp cumin, ground
1 tsp cayenne pepper
2 cups ketchup
1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
2/3 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
4 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp liquid smoke

Place brisket in roasting pan and brush all over with liquid smoke. Combine the salt and spices in a bowl and mix well. Rub the spices into the meat with your hands, coating the whole thing.

Cover the roasting pan and bake until the brisket is fort-tender, about 4 hours at 325 degrees F. Remove the pan from the oven and let the meat cool just enough to handle, but not cold. (It's easier to shred when it's a little warm.) Use 2 forks to pull the meat apart in the pan juices. (You may want to use your fingers)

Make Sauce: Heat oil in heavy saucepan. Add onion, garlic, cumin & cayenne. Saute over medium heat about 7 minutes. Stir in remaining ingredients and simmer, stirring frequently, until slightly thickened, about 12 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes. Put shredded meat in a crock-pot and pour sauce over, stirring well. Heat in crock-pot.
