Chop one head of lettuce and place in a large bowl.
Slice onion and cut in forths, set aside.
Chop and fry bacon (not too crisp) in a medium skillet. Leave bacon and grease in the skillet. Stir in the onions, vinegar and sugar, heat to boiling point and boil for one minute. Pour over lettuce and toss well. Serve as soon as possible.
