Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, beat for 1 minute at medium speed.
Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Alternately add with water to creamed mixture.
Pour into 2 greased and floured 8" cake pans. Bake for 35-40 min. Cool and frost.
