Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Slice bread loaf down the center and baste inside of bread as well as outside of bread with butter and sprinkle with garlic salt. Toast bread in oven face down on a pizza pan for 10 minutes.
Slice or dice tomatoes, mushrooms, and shredded lettuce while bread is toasting. When bread has toasted for 10 minutes, pull from oven, add Miracle Whip (coating both inside halves), then cheese (mozzarella is best, but Swiss and sharp cheddar are good too), tomatoes, mushrooms, roast beef, and lettuce (for onion lovers, try some onion too).
Close sandwich and wrap in tin foil. Put back in oven for an additional 10-20 minutes.
