1 cup shortening, or 1/2 cup Crisco shortening and 1/2 cup butter
2 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 cup buttermilk or water
3 1/2 cups self rising flour
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
1 cup red candied cherries, cut in half
1 cup green candied cherries, cut in half
2 cups dates cut up, chopped
1/2 cup halved pecans (for top of each cookie)

Let's Make It
Cream shortening, butter, sugar, and eggs. Stir in buttermilk or water. Blend flour with above mixture. Stir in pecans, cherries, and dates. Chill for 1 hour or overnight.
Drop by teaspoons on lightly greased cookie sheet. Place pecan half on each cookie before baking.
Bake at 400°F for 8 - 10 minutes.
