Preheat oven to 350°F. Melt butter in microwave and chop green onion. Mix hash browns, onion, butter, chicken soup (straight from can, do not add water or milk), and 1/2 of the cheese. Gently stir till well mixed.
Spread mixture into 9x11, greased baking pan and top with other 1/2 of cheese.
Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
